OVERVIEW

Vein
Removal

Thread veins (also known as spider veins, broken capillaries or telangiectasia) are visible blood vessels often affecting the face and legs. Thread veins can safely be reduced using laser, in a process called photothermolysis. We use Alma Harmony XL Dye VL for facial veins and an Nd: YAG for larger leg veins. The veins are subjected to short pulses of visible light, which targets the haemoglobin, heating just enough to damage and break down the vessel wall without affecting the surrounding skin. Damaged blood vessels are reabsorbed by the body, making them less visible or destroying them completely.

Frequently
asked
questions

The face and body can both be treated, common areas for treatment include the nose, cheeks, chin and legs.

At consultation, your treatment suitability and expectations will be discussed, the area(s) for treatment assessed and a treatment plan to suit your needs will be completed by one of our laser practitioners. You will be asked to fill in a medical history form before signing consent documents and pre-treatment photographs taken. Depending on the area to be treated, you may be asked to partially undress for your treatment. Towels will be used to cover you for your comfort. The area will be cleaned prior to treatment and a cooled gel applied to the area(s) to assist skin cooling and light penetration. Once treatment is completed, the gel will be removed, you can re-dress and aftercare advice will be given.

Lasers are very safe and highly effective in the treatment of facial thread veins and small leg veins. Some patients may have underlying conditions that are likely to cause further or persistent thread veins, such as long-term skin inflammation (rosacea), acne, sun damage, skin trauma, alcohol and some medications. Your suitability will be discussed with your practitioner at your consultation. Newly suntanned or fake tanned skin cannot be treated so we advise waiting at least 4 weeks after tanning.

Yes, a patch test is required for Dye VL treatment, which will be carried out at your consultation, approximately 2-7 days prior to treatment.

Most patients experience a sensation described as being similar to a rubber band flicking on the skin accompanied with a mild heating of the skin. It is mild and generally tolerated well. The laser handpiece cools on contact with the skin to minimise any discomfort.

After treatment, there is usually some mild redness, swelling and skin sensitivity (similar to mild sunburn) for 1-3 days after laser treatment. The veins themselves may look slightly darker or greyish in colour. This can last for up to 2 weeks post treatment. Side effects are mild and most people can continue in their daily routine.

All our laser treatments are carried out by our laser practitioners with over 10 years experience in skin and laser procedures.

We ask that you attend the clinic without make-up if treating the face, and that skin is not tanned prior to treatment. You may be required to stop using some skincare products such as retinol or tretinoin for one week prior to treatment.

Prices start around £100 per session for full cheeks, price is dependent on area size.
